Exchange & Change with LOCAL communities in COTONOU (Benin)

We are a legally registered Beninese NGO stablished to inform and act on intercultural and environmental issues, promote popular and non-formal education and help reduce poverty.

Our activities are developed in the 10th district of the city of Cotonou, specifically in the **Zogbo District where our headquarters are located.

Our project consists mainly on knowledge sharing among communities, meaning that anyone who has an specific know-how is welcome to share it with local communities.

The idea is to welcome volunteers and trainees and allow them to live the environment and the real life conditions of the inhabitants of the economic capital of Benin. Far from the usual clichés about Africa and closer to a more complex social reality.

Moreover, as we are in touch with local communities in need, every help is well received. We try to base our project on education, but sometimes even the places where these people come to learn are not in good conditions; so the goal is also to "help as you can" ! from donating books to help building the library to put them in. Everyone is welcome to add his grain of sand to people in need.

We work in topics as health, education, preservation of the environment, social assistance to the population, construction, reintegration of young people through training and practice, and the renovation of community infrastructure; more generally, capacity building.

We have a team of permanent members from several nationalities (Italy, Benin, France, Venezuela) who have been trained in these various areas of intervention and meet the needs of each sector.

** The district of Zogbo is a popular neighborhood located on the shores of Lake Nokoué which crosses the city of Cotonou. A contrasted neighbourhood between modernity and tradition, between urbanisation and rural lifestyle, between a certain ease and extreme poverty. A dynamic neighbourhood where the need for social intervention is useful and necessary.

Items needed: Mainly materials related to school and education (English or French books, crayons, calculators, rulers, compass...)
As a VISITOR we would like to share with you: As a VISITOR you can come and organize an activity of public awareness related to your know-how (it can be in hospitals, orphanages, schools, refuges, etc) depending on the subject. We can visit together the rural areas where help is more needed. You will discover in a short-term Beninese culture, food and way of living. In this way, even if you visit for a short time, you will get a full inmersion in the rural context of the country. When you leave, we ask you to become a promoter of our projects and to share the experiences you had. Note: We do not advise you to give ANY money directly to the communities but if it's possible for you, we encourage you to donate useful objects and to buy local products that are mostly produced by locals and it's the best way to contribute with their economy. If you decide to stay with our community, we ask for a FEE contribution that includes: accomodation (single room with double bed and private bathroom, 3 foods per day, certificate of participation, transportation, help with administrative procedures before arriving, a tutor helping you in every step of the project you get involved with) 60 € (one week), 150 € (two weeks), 320€ (one month).
Want to VOLUNTEER mid or long term ? Here are the conditions :) : As a VOLUNTEER we ask you to participate in our activities a minimun time of TWO WEEKS. You can develop a program in order for the communities to have a better understanding of your help. For example, if you are coming to teach hygiene standards and regulations in a rural hospital, in a longer period you can create a program to follow and have a better impact on the communities. We need you to be open-minded, ready to help, adaptable and versatile. Depending on the project you will be asked to be fluent in French as it's the local language but it's possible to have an interpreter if necessary during the project.
